A Designers Guide To Booklet Printing

Booklet printing is one of the most efficient ways to collect all the information you want in one place. They are a perfect package for marketing, trade shows, giveaways, mailing and so much more. Small, versatile, you can pick your format, and they are still a cost-effective product for your business.

Let’s take a look at a few essentials you need to know when getting your booklet put together.

Paper Choice

The paper you choose is important. The cover will be a heavier grade of paper. It doesn’t have to be too heavy, and this will depend on what you are using the booklet for. It’s a good idea to use heavier stock. This will help keep the booklet together longer.

Then you can choose between gloss or matte finish. You can also choose to have the cover laminated, for extra strength.

The pages on the inside can be lighter, but you can also choose to have matte or gloss finish here. If you are using the booklets in an information session or your booklet includes an order form, matte finish is nicer and cleaner for writing on.

However, if you choose a gloss finish for the cover, you’ll want a gloss finish for the inside pages, too.

Page Count

Trying to determine how much information you want to put in the booklet can be tricky. A good rule of thumb is for a traditional booklet four booklet pages is one sheet of paper. That’s because they are folded in half and both sides are used.

Page Sequence

The order you want the information on will be important, too. The printer needs to determine what needs to go where so the information comes out in the proper order. Think about the first page of your booklet being connected to the last.

Booklet Size

You can pick between landscape and portrait for your booklets. This will be up to you and what you need them for. The portrait is more popular, as it is easier to handle and read. If you are using graphics that you want to spread across the two facing pages, then landscape would work better for that.

Layout and Design

Whether you are putting together a theatre program or a booklet to showcase your products, the layout and design matters.

Colour

You want to use colour. It makes it far more interesting and breaks up the visuals from the text. Don’t go crazy with colour, as it can be overwhelming. If you are showing products, try to break up all the similar colours, so they don’t all just blend together.

White Space

Empty space is also important. It allows movement and breaks up the information. It makes it easier to take in for the reader. Too much information, whether it’s text or pictures can still be overwhelming and people will just stop looking.

Purpose

Who you are making this booklet for is important. It should reflect your product and your audience. Do you need detailed instructions? Order forms? Maps?

Customising your booklet is the perfect way to showcase your product or service. Using pictures is also a good idea, preferably, your own. If you can use pictures of your own product, especially in use, pictures of you and your team. They make it more personal and people are far less likely to throw it away.

Booklet Printing made is an excellent way to extend your reach to potential customers, as well. Versatile, inexpensive and readily available. They are the best answer to so many projects, from school, promotion and parties.

Choose the right size for your purpose

We’re big on keeping costs down on our brochure and booklet printing projects, but we always have in mind that the brochure needs to be 100% suitable for purpose. With this in mind we will always give you our best advice on the right size of booklet for your project. If we think it would be best condensed down to an A5, we’ll advise it. Conversely if an A4 booklet is better for your project intent, we’ll advise on that also. While keeping costs down is paramount, it must not be at the detriment of the project at hand.

Don’t order more than you need

The big opportunity for saving money is being super efficient with your buying of booklets. One of the key opportunities as a digital printer is to only print what you need and this is perfect as within the remit of a digital printer we can print as many or as little booklets as you need. If the request is for 438 booklets, that’s exactly what you’ll get.

Use a professional designer

One of the key saving opportunities is also one of highest recommendations when it comes to printing booklets. A well designed booklet can save pagination and thus reduce costs, however a well designing booklet with a specific intent and focus will help you achieve the project goals more effectively. And if this booklet proves to be a great converter of sales, then saving the money on the printing becomes a secondary concern.

Brochure Printing Finishes

Brochure Printing

When we talk about the finishing options on brochure printing finishes the first thing to consider is the type of binding to use. Binding is the wire or glue that keeps the booklets’ pages together and usually is determined by the number of pages (pagination) of the booklet.

Types of Brochure Printing Finishes

Saddle Stitched Booklet Printing

For booklets with a pagination up to say 44-48 pages, Saddle Stitching on booklets would be the primary method of finishing. If you are unsure of the term saddle stitching, this is where 2 wires are inserted into the print in the middle of the document and the sheets are gathered and folded in half to create a booklet. The middle area where the stitches are is called the spine. Saddle Stitched Booklets are one of the most common finishing options available.

Perfect Bound Brochure Printing

Any brochure or booklet printing with a pagination above 44pp is suitable for perfect binding. With perfect binding, the cover & inner pages are glued together along the spine with a strong  glue. Once the glue is set, we use a guillotine to trim the fore-edge, top and bottom of the brochure to provide the “perfect edges”.

Wire Bound Booklet Printing

Finally, we must consider wire bound booklets as an options for print finishing. Wire bound booklets are most commonly used for manuals or documents with a vast pagination. However these is no hard and fast rule to say they can’t be used for smaller booklets. Wire binding is robust. It keeps pages firmly secured in the booklet, but also allows the page to be folded to the back of the brochure many times, making it suitable for many technical uses. We have a number of clients who use wire bound booklets for training manuals, others for recipe books. Whatever the reason you need this type of booklet, we can assure you the highest quality printing and finish.

Top hint – Saddle Stitched Booklets must have a pagination in multiples of 4. Perfect Bound Booklets & Wire Bound Booklets can have a pagination increasing in 2s.

When considering brochure printing finishes, it’s prudent to consider the desired outcome of the booklet to ensure the finishing type matches the expected result. Saddle stitching for regular projects, perfect bound for larger or more bespoke booklets. Wire binding for functional documents.

Booklet Printing Dublin

  • What size of booklet do I need? – At kaizenprint.ie we offer 3 main booklet sizes: A5 Portrait, A5 Landscape & A4 Portrait. We also offer bespoke sizes on request but have found that the majority of customers will order from our standard sizes. By keeping to a standard size as above we can offer the best value printing prices. This is because the print is efficiently set up and sheet wastage is at a minimum.
  • What paper type will I choose for my brochure? – Within our digital printed booklets we make the suggestion of silk paper types for all clients. Again the majority of clients choose silk over gloss or uncoated and by buying this paper in bulk, we are in the perfect position to provide high quality low cost booklet printing Dublin.
  • What is the difference between self cover and heavy cover? – Hopefully this is self explanatory, but the self cover is simply using the same paper weight throughout the booklet including the cover. The heavy cover replaces the outer sheet with a heavier 250gsm silk paper stock.
  • Do I need lamination on my booklet? – We don’t always recommend lamination on booklet printing. However this is very much dependant on the uses of the booklet and brochures. Is your booklet single use or do you want it to be referenced by users on a more regular basis? What value of product and service do you offer? Your booklet should reflect the values and quality of your business and so by adding lamination and of course a heavy cover, we can show a more premium feeling booklet. All without expensive costs!
  • How many pages will my booklet have? – One of the most common questions we’re asked is about pagination or page count. Booklets generally are printed with page counts in multiples of 4. If you take an A4 copy sheet and fold in in half along the long edge this essentially becomes a 4pp brochure. Do the same and add it to the original and you have an 8page brochure. And so on….
